That does not appear to have been an accident.

I don't even want to think about hearing what that sousaphone player said on the bus ride after the game.TubaTinker wrote:That does not appear to have been an accident.

He does seem to say "watch out" to the cameraman shortly before doing his bow, (I assume that bow is an established part of the tradition.)TubaTinker wrote:That does not appear to have been an accident.

"Script Ohio" is one the oldest traditions in college football--"dotting the i" (which is done by a 4th year tuba player) has been done the same exact way since 1938--the cameraman should have known better to get that damn close!

It was a home game... probably a very short bus ride (if anyThe Jackson wrote:I don't even want to think about hearing what that sousaphone player said on the bus ride after the game.TubaTinker wrote:That does not appear to have been an accident.

He will *next* time! (as will every other cameraman in the US, I'd bet)TUBAD83 wrote:"Script Ohio" is one the oldest traditions in college football--"dotting the i" (which is done by a 4th year tuba player) has been done the same exact way since 1938--the cameraman should have known better to get that damn close!

I was just guessing that the band room might be in the School of Music - hard to tell from the OSU website.BigDale wrote:That does not appear to have been an accident.

They do not go to Weigel Hall, but to the Stadium Bandroom, which is about that distance or less!
(not that I have not been back to my Alma Mater since the early '90s!)
And yes, it did look sort of staged when the camera fell flat on it's side with the senior dotting the "i" still in the center of the picture.
The incident is certainly getting a lot of coverage around the sports blogs and such (and they are mostly getting the fact that the instrument is a Sousaphone!)

When I was at the U. of Iowa I played in the Hawkeye Marching Band from 1958 to 1963. At a Ohio State v. Iowa game the HMB did a script "iowa" routine that mimicked the script Ohio. And we did it in lower case so a sousa could dot the i in iowa.
My memory is getting foggy at my age but I think the sousa who dotted the i was none other than Chester Schmitz, who played in the HMB the same years that I did.
(and we did not wipe out any cameramen)

As someone who works in Television and has done a lot of sports coverage, I have several times
"taken one for the team". The most enjoyable has been doing handheld camera under the backboards during girls basketball games, and having the ladies crash right into you. Football sideline handheld as likewise very dangerous, and I am proud that all the hits I took from gridiron goons, none has knocked me off my feet.
Actually the most damage a camera has ever taken here is when a sheaf bale during the Celtic Classic Highland games missed it's mark and hit the back of the camera, and the freelancer lost his grip and it dropped to the ground,
damaging the lens.

The same freelancer was laid flat during a college hoops game in Teaneck, NJ. This guy also had trouble working at the Celtic Classic after consuming Haggis and having it not agree with him, I think that portajohn is still off limits! poor Bob.
I Think all our guys know to NOT get in the way of the Band!
Back in 1958-1963 era, the cameras were on the sidelines only as they were too big and the Mohawk Multicore Cam cable was huge thick stuff. Now we have 1/2" triax that's alot easier to manage, and the big time outfits have wireless cameras.

Re: Tubas don't seem to like the national spotlight...
My favorite Youtube clip of 2009.
Fortunately for the cameraman, it looks like he only nailed the camera, knocking off whatever box that was on top of it (a mini-monitor, maybe?). Check the cameraman's shadow in the slow-mo replay of the hit.
Has anyone found footage from another perspective?
