There are two factors I cannot get together here:

The Posaunenchor movement to my knowledge is mainly Protestant, but I would have assumed that Ulm was in a Catholic area in Southern Germany bordering on Bavaria.

When Two Rivers in Nashville was at their peak in the late 90's, we had 10 trumpets and 10 trombones in the church orchestra almost every Sunday. (And two tubas; with the 1290 I could balance them quite nicely.)

An impressive gathering of brass. I would like to stand in the bell tower and listen. I wonder how this many players are motivated to show up.

Beats our 2 trumpets and 2 trombones. But saves me from buying a MW 195 or 196. Not that I wouldn't LOVE to have one, but I think I would rather have the $10K.

Just to make sure: This is not the normal brass ensemble of the Ulm cathedral. It is a Landesposaunentag, which equals that all church brass ensembles from one of the German states gather a weekend. Ulm is in Baden-Würtemberg, the south-western state. But as Ulm is close to the border to Bavaria, there also may be players from that state. Kurt will know the details.

While not as "massive" as that event, there are very large brass-wind church orchestras in Brazil - they feature a rather unusual Bass Saxophone (they call it "Contra Baixo") along with other more usual instruments. Very Bass Heavy!

The bass saxes apparently are in the usual low BBb pitch, but with extensions for their written G below treble clef stave. That is the low F of BBb tubas, one octave below the bass stave.

The title of the second video tells that it is a regional rehearsal. The ladies standing behind the bass instruments’ row are the choir. Such orchestra wouldn’t leave much space for a congregation in any sub-cathedral-sized church.

I think that there are players from all over germany...............
I´m still not sure if Ulm is at Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg,the happening is known as Bayerischer landesposaunentag...................

BTW,it´s not the best idea to watch that performance from the church tower,as usually during the last verses of the final hymn tune the bells start chiming and accompany the band,could be ear damaging that or your final listen...............

Württembergischer Landesposaunentag: Alle zwei Jahre findet in Ulm an einem Wochenende im Mai oder Juni der Landesposaunentag des „Evangelischen Jugendwerks in Württemberg“ statt, bei dessen Schlussfeier bis zu 9000 teilnehmende Blechbläser den größten Posaunenchor der Welt bilden.

This tells that the event is every second year in Ulm and that it is related to the German Protestant church.

Ulm is in Württemberg, but its satellite town Neu Ulm is right across the Donau/Danube, which places it in Bavaria.
