I'm sure there is a few on this board who are Victor Wooten fans. Let's keep a thread going to put some good videos of his technique and musicianship up so that some of the other prospective doublers can see the one of the best. (Please note the position of the instrument, to which I am sure bloke would commend).
I'll start with a video of "Amazing Grace". Quite a display of just about every technique he has on the bass.

A Chick from Corea (from Bass Extremes: VW with Steve Bailey – in fact they are all great)

And a lot of very hot stuff with Bela Fleck.
Anyone read VW’s book (“The Music Lesson”)?

On top of the amazing technique and musicianship, VW is also a genuinely good guy.

After reading this thread and the first chapter of the "The Music Lesson," I promptly went out and bought the book. What a great book. I'd recommend it if you are looking for a new way to view things, or even to challenge the way you think.
Thanks for the thread.

Funny on the timing of your post.dfear wrote:After reading this thread and the first chapter of the "The Music Lesson," I promptly went out and bought the book. What a great book. I'd recommend it if you are looking for a new way to view things, or even to challenge the way you think.
Thanks for the thread.
I gave (i.e., permanent "loan") my latest of copy of this to a student a few days back, and tonight ordered another copy for myself (again).
I was starting to think nobody else had read the thing, let alone thought it remotely worthwhile. For the uninitiated, it is not a "how to" book in the traditional sense of 'famous name performer' books. Not at all; but rather so much more. Much substance to be found therein.
Perhaps you could share your thoughts once you complete the other chapters. Keep us "posted."
Cheers

Re: VW (Victor Wooten) thread
I have finished the remaining "measures" of Mr. Wooten's book, and I found myself enlightened and enjoying my job as an educator a little more again.
I have to say that there is a great deal of things that I find myself doing from the book, but had never really realized it, nor thought of it in the way he presents it. I really enjoyed the connection of Music to Life in that way.
But what helped my the most was to remember to "show them music" rather than "teach them notes." That is something that had been missing from my teaching for most of this year. This school year has been a little spastic to say the least. My fall semester was dismal at best. My attendance in class was very inconsistent due to the events of Life.
I spent the first month of school on jury duty and missed three days of instruction sitting on a jury for a very tragic case involving the death of a two year old boy (did I mention I have a toddler of my own at home). That particular week was also the first week my 6th graders had instrument placement activities...uh-oh! Meanwhile, my Mother's health is rapidly declining due to a three year battle of cancer, and we lost her during the middle of October, and the pinnacle of marching season. I'm not sharing this to say "woe is me," or to offer excuses for my students-they are exactly where they should be-I just struggled more to get them there. No, write I write to remind my readers that when Life happens, remember the music and not the notes. In my frustration to catch my students up-I began focusing to much on the notes and not balancing the other elements of music-I began to leave music out of music class. Since my little nudge from "The Music Lesson," I remembered to teach the music and my students enjoy class more, learn more efficiently, and I enjoy "showing them" more.
I remember the expression that "Music is Life." While that may hold true, I offer that "Life is Music." I share in Mr. Wooten's philosophy that we all carry music in US and through US as part of the essence of our Life, or at least that is the way I understood it while reading the book. I now remember to try and approach every day with an open ear as well as an open mind and listen to the melody of everyone.
I hope that this "review" was enjoyable, I'm not sure that it is what is expected from a book review, but then, "The Music Lesson" really isn't what you expect from a music lesson either. Enjoy! Keep living the Music.
