I know I am biased because I work with Oystein Baadsvik on tours etc., but I figured I would share a newly uploaded video I found on YouTube tonight:

For anyone interested, the October (Octuba) tour has been finalized and I will post more details in the events section in a few days. The stops will include 3 stops in New Hampshire, a masterclass and recital in Boston, a masterclass and recital at the Indiana U of PA, a masterclass and recital at Tyler Jr. College, TX, a masterclass at TCU in TX, and a masterclass and recital at Lincoln Memorial University in TN.

What a beautiful location; too bad the videographer didn't have a tripod or something. The brass ensemble sounds great, as does Oystein.

Just have to say, this piece melts my heart every time I hear it. Well done!

Very well played, but is this good music for low brasses? I first saw the video with Childs Jr. and found the music boring despite the good playing. The same went for the Baadsvik version. The version with the Korean cornettist spoke more to me. Probably because the melodic line came out more clearly.

There also is a video with the background only and the solo line presented as sheet music for sort of music-minus-one playing. I am not impressed by the harmonic progression. But of course the music may have worked well as background for some meditative movie sequence.

I happen to like it in low brasses. It doesn't help when most of the examples we have to hear are from relatively poor recording quality sources.

Venue was the nave of the Stanford Memorial Church, Leland Stanford, Jr. University, Stanford. CA. July 2009, and the performance was a component of the Brass at Menlo workshop.

I think he's referring to the oval thing next to the french horns, which I think is a Wagner tuba.

For all intents and purposes, does left handed bariton=Wagner tuba (as in, are there any leftie baritons)?

At first I thought it was a really big top valve euph or a very small top valve tuba and wondered why there would be 2 tubas in the group AND why they wouldn't be sitting together (such slaves to "tradition" as we tuba-ers are!).

Now I see him, and from his lack of coiffure I even think I know who he is: Bob Ward, solo horn in the SF Symphony, whom I know from the horn lists. He is a fine guy who easily would have his fun playing 4th on a Wagner tuba in a setting which an arrangement anyway.

As for left handed ovals not being Wagner tubas, I am not really sure. My galleries hold photos of a few left handed ovals with 3 valves. Most are in Bb, one is in F. I asked about them on the horn lists, because 3 valve Wagner tubas don’t make much sense in the orchestral repertory. My idea was that they were marching instruments for horn players much like there are marching horns in a lot of US bands.

Hans Pizka, retired solo horn from the same orchestra as Bob Tucci played in, is an Austrian a bit older than me. He maintained, that the Austrians had left handed oval Tenorhörner in their military bands. I haven’t heard that from other sources, and I think the instruments in my galleries have too narrow receivers for anything but horn mouthpieces.

I sent the link to Bob Ward, and he confirmed being the one on Wagner tuba.

One of the lead Sousaphone players in the Stanford Band got married to the band's lead trombonist in that church (locally called MemChu) many years ago. There was a 20 piece trombone choir, but no Sousaphone choir... it was quite a performance - lots of echo!

Love this piece.... LOVE it on tuba.
