I hope the whole thing was staged and his orchestra doesn't actually talk and mess around that much every time he stops rehearsal to go back and work on something. I would stab myself in the eye with an ice pick if I had to deal with that much extraneous activity every time the group stopped playing.

I'm reminded of the clip of the young Asian student band posted in this forum a short while ago...I'll bet they don't do that, and I'll bet they get much more accomplished because of it.

I'm leaving my hyperboles at the door when I say that this is how it was for a lot of band/orchestra rehearsals I was a part of. I'm still surprised that those conductors didn't stab themselves in the eye with an ice pick.

Seemed familiar to me too. I always had a theory that if kids practiced more on their own time, they wouldn't be so mesmerized by making sounds on the instrument during class on the director's time. There's a HUGE difference between *practice* and *rehearsal*.

I wish my directors would do this. Only for real, not as a gag. :?
