Nice playing. Both sounded good.

Surprisingly, I liked the sound of the old horn better. Both are good however. In a different environment, such as a church or concert hall, I likely would have a different opinion.

Thank you for the remarks bizarely I frequently practice on the older tuba as I do not like the sound of the new one at home but love it out doors and in the rehearsal hall.
Despite having good 10 foot high ceiling I do not like the sound I produce at home. The bigger bell flare also has changed how I hear some pitches.
When I first got the new one it was just a hair flat with a Dennis Wicke 2l mouthpiece after 2 months of playing I am now sharp requiring the main slide to be adjusted by a quarter inch with the same moutpiece.

Cool! I like both of them but the Jin Bao does sound very nice. How is the intonation and low range?

Thank you the intonation is very good it has blended very well with the bands I play with. It's low range is quite good very strong and open down to a pedal C three octaves below middle C after that is not very controllable. It's upper range is good the Eb above middle C is a little flat after that my skills let me down all fingerings come out as a C for me managed an F and a G once or twice but not controlled.

There are two BH monster 3v imperials in one of my bands and it keeps them company down below much better than my new standard did in the past.

As I mentioned above it has gone from being a hair flat overall to being sharp overall which was a surprise as I have not changed mouth piece I use a DW 2 for the Besson and a 2L for the JinBao. But I would rather be sharp and adjust the main slide than be flat with all slides pushed in.

Has anybody else had a similar reversal over a period of time with a newly aquired instrument?

I have been practicing with a Snark clip on tuner since I got the new tuba as I had wanted to try and lip up the the flatness so maybe this has caused the sharpness the old tuba has not changed.

I have found that larger tubas do like to be played in larger spaces, so that may explain your different perception of the two tubas in the house, or out playing.

For the change in pitch, have you washed out the Jinbao? I wonder if there was dirt left inside from the manufacturing process which has moved causing the change? Just a wild guess - I could and probably am wrong

No I have not washed it out for the first month I cleaned and oiled the pistons every day until the cloth started to come away clean after wiping the first week there was a lot of black residue lapping paste I am guessing.
Then I fitted some silcon rubber spring pads and this has made a big difference to valve action but I am still puzzled about the change in pitch though the change is welcome and it doesn't feel weird playing and it hasn't affected how I play my other tubas.
