N.Y. Phil/Bernstein/Novotny/ - Tchaik 6 - 1960's

Post by toobagrowl »

I have been looking for this particular recording of Tchaikovsky 6 w/Bernstein and the N.Y. Phil on the Columbia label (now Sony) made in the 1960's and finally found it on YouTube.

This is my favorite recording of this piece. :tuba: I remember listening to this on the original LP my mom had. The original LP's cover is a huge pic of the N.Y. Phil.
Novotny sounds fantastic on this recording!

And because of that, I just ordered the box set from Amazon that includes this recording. Highly recommended :D

Sure :tuba:
Did you listen to Hamlet? That's some serious deep tuba sound!
The YouTube video doesn't do it justice though; it sounds even better and much clearer on the CDs......speaking of which....
My 5 CD box set arrived today and it's amazing. It's the complete Tchaik symphonies 1-6 w/Bernstein & N.Y. Phil on the Sony label.
Romeo & Juliet, Francesca da Rimini, Slavonic March, 1812 Overture, and Hamlet are on the CDs as well. Bill Bell is on Romeo & Juliet (rec. 1957), Francesca da Rimini (rec. 1960), and Symphony no. 5 (rec. 1960) Joe Novotny is on everything else.

It's just fantastic all around - the sound, balance, style, tempos, Bernstein's interpretation, etc. :tuba:
