I think I heard the same podcast just a few days ago - but I get so many comedy related ones it is hard to keep track of who said what!
Thanks!

(very true with the bit about the role of the Drum Major - been there myself a few times...)

Think it was Mohr Stories or The Nerdist that I heard it on.
While I have never been a Drum Major the first two bands I marched with the ITGWU Band and then St James used to lead the St Patricks day parade in Dublin which meant we followed directly after the Lord Mayors Coach the biggest cheer we ever got was when an unfortunate trombone player walked straight through a fresh mound of manure the following ranks spilt around the pile like a stream around a rock. We did not let him get on the bus wearing his shoes and trousers.

The Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band is a bit more "free form marching" than most. For many years we had a guy with a shovel and a rolling bin to scoop up the more dangerous piles. Many years ago at a St. Patrick parade a bunch of drunk guys attacked him and he had to use his shovel for defense. Several arrests happened, including our guy...

I see The Nerdist podcast #125 (9/20/11) features Tom Wilson, and his website is http://tomwilsonusa.com/
