So how do they mark off their sets?

Wearing a sousaphone or a drum harness would seem to be unsafe on ice skates...

We skate 8 to the blue line...

I played in the Brown band during hockey season in the late 70's. It was difficult to play the sousaphone and skate at the same time. Center of gravity was higher than it should have been on ice skates. Found that alcohol made it easier...

Ki-Yi-Yi Matt. We missed you at the 45th Anniversary Alumni Ice Show on Saturday! I was one of the founders of the Skating Band and skated in the first show in February of 1970. In that first show, we did a block formation counter-skate, where the 2 Sousaphones did not turn around - but rather stepped to the side and then skated backwards through the band - while playing. Very scary for the rest of the band.

In 45 years, I haven't fallen...yet...come back next February to see if I can keep the streak alive.

Actually, I think the hardest instrument to skate with is the bass drum. Properly worn, a Sousaphone is nicely balanced. Yes, the center of gravity *is* a bit high. Here's a shot taken during rehearsal for the 1970 show (I am, of course, in the crease - note that fiberglass had not yet been invented...):
