Information about a video

Post by tylerferris1213 »

Hello everyone,

There was a thread a few weeks back on here that I'm having some trouble finding. It involved this video:

http://youtu.be/veiQb4tZuGw" target="_blank

I am doing a project for my last undergraduate music theory class, and I thought I'd do some research into this. I've tried doing research, but I can only find the venue in which the piece was performed. Any help would be appreciated. A link to the old thread would be enough.

Piernik performed a very similar piece at the 1973 conference. It impressed me at the time, but doesn't seem to have led to a lot of refinements in the last 40 years. If you want the name of the 1973 piece that involved the same modifications of the instrument, I could probably find it in my files. Come to think of it, it was probably composed by Piernik himself.

That would be great! It would be interesting to compare both years.

This kind of writing is not my cup of tea, couldn't get past the first minute. Not saying there was anything wrong with the player or the performace at all, just dont care for writers writing for effect and not the audience pleasure.

Pleasure is in the ear of the beholder/audience member. Cool piece and performance.

That's an amazing performance. Piernik is a giant of the Central European avant-garde, which is a big and amazing scene.

Tyler, you want to google Boguslaw Schaeffer, who is the pianist and composer here. He and Piernik and Penderecki are kind of the big-time post-WWII Polish musical avant-garde. Schaeffer's stuff merits a lot of attention.

A very brief glance at Schaeffer's wikipedia page shows that he wrote a piece for tuba and piano called "Minimal Art" in 1977. Looking at the hair and clothes on the video performance, story checks out. Try to get a score, or just analyze a different piece. Schaeffer's manuscripts are just mind-numbingly awesome to look at. beyond the graphic representation of the sound, though, there's a ton of open interpretation and improvisation involved in playing his music. So you can't really get in depth in terms of analysis without knowing what the musicians are reacting to visually.

Sorry, I sorted through my programs from the first conference and did not find one for the Piernik concert. There does not seem to be much information about him online in English, so I can't help.

Hey,
Didn't we play a piece called "whales" where we were supposed to enter the auditorium one at a time playing some music, I can't remember what, and it was at Ball State University(Les Varner was teacher there?). Was that the first conference for TUBA? I wouldn't be surprised. Alot of experimental music was going on in the music schools at that time too.
