HONK 2015

Post by David Richoux »

Some of you might remember previous post I have made about this worldwide alternative non-profit band movement, now in the 10th year. Hundreds of low brass players, along with high brass, woodwinds, percussion and misc odd instruments (plus dancers and other performers) gather in various cities for (mostly) free public performances in the streets, plazas, parks, and other venues. There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm, the music is a wide spectrum from NOLA Hot Brass style to wild and crazy original compositions - each group does their own thing and it is not a competition. Children are encouraged to join in as well as the "old folks."
I have been to (and played in) many previous HONKs in Boston, NYC, Austin and Seattle - they also happen in Providence, Rome, Sydney, and even Rio!
This weekend is Boston (centered in Somerville,) Monday in Providence, and then the rest of the week in NYC.
The NYC events still need to complete their Kickstart campaign within the next 6 days, so please check out the various websites and chip in a few bucks if you can. And if you are in the Boston, Providence, or NYC areas - check it out in person!
