I'm impressed. I really can't tell that much difference between the mouthpiece and a reed by the video. But then again, it'd probably be a world of difference if I was in the same room with the guy.

I've tried this, and intonation was wack; his might not be perfect but it's a lot closer. Don't know if his setup is better there, or his playing style is just less dependent on the instrument, probably some of both. There's a video where he takes the mouthpiece and bits off his Eb sousaphone and sticks them into a can and plays that.

Yes, it is interesting, not least because the mouthpiece has so completely overwhelmed the instrument itself in determining the tambre. Having seen the video, I say yes of course – but I wouldn't have predicted it.
