Want to hear Gilmore's Band back in 1891? Done!

Post by Dave Detwiler »

While I can't say for sure that Herman Conrad is the one playing bass in this recording, it's probably a good bet (and he may very well be playing that BBb Bass "Monster," built by F. Sudre, that you'll see in the photo I posted with the recording). Conrad was with Gilmore's Band from 1888 until Gilmore died in September 1892. Then he joined up with Sousa's new band.

This is a very rare recording, back when Gilmore was still leading his band. Special thanks to Michael Khanchalian for getting me access to it!

Here's the link - enjoy!

Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1927 Pan American 64K Sousaphone Grand

Oh how lucky people are that they can benefit on YouTube with something virtually unheard for 115 years! Amazing!

Just wrapping my head around the fact that that recording was made 125 years ago.

Awesome!

I love the look of the Keystone Cops in the back of the band. Even way back then they had to keep an eye on the band.
