While I can't say for sure that Herman Conrad is the one playing bass in this recording, it's probably a good bet (and he may very well be playing that BBb Bass "Monster," built by F. Sudre, that you'll see in the photo I posted with the recording). Conrad was with Gilmore's Band from 1888 until Gilmore died in September 1892. Then he joined up with Sousa's new band.
This is a very rare recording, back when Gilmore was still leading his band. Special thanks to Michael Khanchalian for getting me access to it!

I love the look of the Keystone Cops in the back of the band. Even way back then they had to keep an eye on the band.
