Re: Contrabass trumpet/Don Butterfield. That is absolutely vintage Don Butterfield - thank you for sharing it!
I studied with him for 3 years, but it's amazing how much about him I simply didn't know; and at that, I thought he was one of the most interesting people I'd ever met..... "It ain't got no gas in it"
Re: Contrabass trumpet/Don Butterfield.Don comes on at 1:50, the horn comes on at about 6 minutes.
Re: Contrabass trumpet/Don Butterfield.What a great clip - thanks!
Terry Stryker
Old, ugly horns that play really, really well.
Re: Contrabass trumpet/Don Butterfield.Where is the instrument now, that's the real question!
Re: Contrabass trumpet/Don Butterfield. That horn is in a museum somewhere. I don't think Don actually ever owned it; Don was very good at self-promotion, and turned up on this show several times - alphorn, contrabass trombone, etc. I borrowed the contrabass trombone once from him - it was awful, but I picked up a gig because of it! Even on this musical oddity Don still sounds like Don!
Garry Moore was a fan of musicians; I believe you can hear Pee Wee Erwin (another one of my mentors) playing with the studio band backing up Don on trumpet. Mark Heter Mark Heter
