I doubt the trains ever ran on time in that system, no matter what we are told. I bet the schedules were just altered to be more realistic when they discovered what they could and could not do. Nothing worked over in that dump. I have friends in our orchestra who served in the Red Banner Northern Fleet sub forces and the Red Army as the NCO of a rocket truck. All they do is talk bad about how lame the system was and how happy they were to get discharged and then get clearance to emigrate to Mexico. From Mexico they came here. And we have tipped many adult beverages in honor of their lives here. "Soso" was only so-so. But he could have you shot for pretty much anything he wanted. I read a two-book biography of him a few years back. Learned a whole lot. Losing the Cold War to that system would have been a tragedy.

I believe we are currently losing an internal cold war to that system. It is tragic.

I'm currently losing an internal war to a jalapeno pizza. I'm sure anyone near me would find it tragic.

I just returned from a 70th birthday party for a family member held in a casino in Tunica MS. I now remember why I quit gambling 40 years ago. What a boring weekend, even considering that my wife won enough to pay for our trip. I would have preferred to just stay home. I did get a kick out of the people watching though. Some people are just naturally funny, especially in that context.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Some of the highest-paying and most depressing gigs I've ever played have been casino gigs.

Besides the fact that there are hundreds or thousands of people simultaneously ruining their personal finances, most of the people who frequent those establishments are so physically ugly (morbidly obese, smokers, drug addicts, sleep-deprived gambling addicts, etc...) that anyone who isn't just absolutely hideous is almost a distraction. Finally, the "amazing" food is - at best- bland (seemingly prepared to appeal to compulsive eaters), and obviously is prepared by 3rd-rate chefs and cooks.

Casinos are a really, really expensive place to get drunk for free. :)

The last time I went to a casino, my wife put a single nickel in a slot machine and won $20. We cashed out and left right away, how could we ever top that? :)

I don't think that would be possible. By the way, I like the quote, "Casinos are a really, really expensive place to get drunk for free."
