shrubbery to consider

- west side of house (with tall foundation) in the "deep south"
- Virtually all bad weather (which nearly all is from the west) will assault this side of the house.
- direct sun in the hottest part of the day (1 P.M. - 8 P.M.)
- coldest temps typically down to teens (rare -0 range cold snaps possible) in the winter
- ' should be very insect resistant
- slow growing (prefer optimum size 4' spherical) and not sensitive to trimming
- color a plus
- large circular stand of euonymus (hiding electrical boxes) nearly... ' would prefer something different and slower-growing for this application.
- stickers acceptable if very pretty, insect-resistant, drought/heat/cold-resistant, and slow-growing

Look no further.

My grandmother had one of these heirloom shurbs in her yard. These smell absolutely wonderful. That's why I planted 4. You can't kill 'em. Prune all you want. They are evergreen too.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Is this what we (when children) used to call "bee bushes", Al ?

They're a couple hundred feet from (and facing) five bee hives.

I don't recall the term bee bushes, but it fits. Although my honey bees seem to prefer the white salvia on the other side of the yard. The bumble bees prefer this abelia, as do the butterflies. 3 of my bushes are in the front yard about 25 feet NW of the front door. Every morning when I take the dog out I have to stop on the front step and soak in the smell. It's really nice. Blooms all summer and leaves for 4 seasons.

Yes,
Bumblebees always like these, but honeybees as well. Today, there are far fewer honeybees generally...except - in my rural county - there are MANY beekeepers, and (most anywhere I visit around here) I see honeybees in the clover - just as I did a half century ago as a small boy in Memphis.
