Sewanee Summer Music Festival Seeking Tuba Applicants

Post by musica5341 »

The Sewanee Summer Music Festival (http://www2.sewanee.edu/ssmf) at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, is still seeking applicants for 2 tuba vacancies. The festival dates are June 16-July 22, 2007. Due to the relatively short notice of this announcement, please contact Mark Savage at (931)598-1225 or e-mail him at ssmf@sewanee.edu.

Application materials can be found on the festival's Web site. Financial aid support will be offered to help secure those students who are interested. Students are selected for admission on the basis of background and performance ability. The minimum age is 12 with no maximum age limit; however, the festival gives preference to students who will benefit most from the Sewanee educational experience.

This summer festival combines a five-week program for advanced music students with a professional concert series. SSMF maintains three full symphony orchestras including two student orchestras, the Sewanee Symphony and the Cumberland Orchestra. The Festival Orchestra consists of faculty, staff and invited advanced students. Both student orchestras perform important orchestra repertory weekly. The following great works are scheduled to be performed this summer:

Hindemith Konzertmusik for Strings and Brass, Op. 50
Dukas Fanfare from "La Peri"
Strauss Don Quixote, Op. 35
Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Bernstein Orchestral Suite from "West Side Story"
Mussorgsky Night on Bald Mountain

Members of the brass faculty will include the following:

Russell DeVuyst, trumpet
David Brockett, horn
Mark Babbitt, trombone
Bernard H. Flythe, tuba

Bios on the aforementioned musicians can be found on the festival's Web site.

One student has been accepted so far. The managing director of the festival would like to accept two more.

I have not received any official confirmation of more acceptances, although more students have been applying since the initial posting. If you are still interested in applying to Sewanee, please feel free to contact Mark Savage. His information is listed on the posting. Thanks.
