The University of Central Arkansas has scholarship and TA opportunities for interested students for a Masters degree.
Here's the situation:
The TA position (of which there are two) is for the Band Department at UCA. Usually it is reserved for students interested in the MM Conducting track, but due to both our band TA's graduating this year, we have some wiggle room. You have two choices:
Masters degree in Tuba or Euphonium Performance. Your TA job would be as a band assistant (librarian duties, paperwork for band faculty, marching band assistance, etc).
Masters degree in Conducting with a Tuba or Euphonium emphasis. You could earn a conducting degree at UCA while still studying tuba/euphonium. TA job is still as a band assistant.
About UCA:
Located in Conway, AR (just north of Little Rock), UCA is a campus of about 13,000 students and is the second largest institution in the state. We have a wonderful music program with some extremely talented faculty. Our tuba professor is Christian Carichner, with degrees from Ithaca College and Arizona State University. Christian was the tuba and euphonium instructor at Northern Arizona University last year, and is new to the faculty at UCA. He teaches courses in ear training, applied tuba lessons, and is the assistant marching band director. Our trombone/euphonium professor is Dr. Denis Winter. Dr. Winter holds degrees from Ohio University, New England Conservatory, and the University of North Texas. Formerly of the US Coast Guard Band, Dr. Winter has taught at UCA for over 20 years.
This would be an excellent opportunity for tuba and euphonium students with an interest in conducting. It seems that the trends in the "college teaching world" are shifting towards Tuba Professor AND _________ (especially at smaller schools). The "AND" is often Band, Marching Band, History, Music Appreciation, etc. and UCA would provide an excellent opportunity to gain some of that very experience.
