University of South Florida Graduate Assistantship
Looking for a great place to earn your MM in Tuba or Euphonium Performance/Education? Check out the University of South Florida in Tampa with Jay Hunsberger (Principal Tuba, Sarasota Orchestra and Professor of Tuba and Euphonium; BM and MM from Indiana University). The school boasts an exceptional tuba/euphonium studio (a recent past host of a regional ITEC), strong guest tuba/euphonium clinicians (recent/upcoming guests include Oystein Baadsvik, Dan Perantoni, Adam Frey and Jason Ham), and an active performance regimen. Tampa and Sarasota are home to fine professional orchestras and countless performing groups allowing students to be fully immersed in a very creative atmosphere. Auditions will be held 1/16, 2/20, and 3/20. Jay is the "real deal" folks, and is running a GREAT program at USF. Anyone looking to do MM work next year really needs to give him and the USF program a long look.

I totally agree with dwa. Jay Hunsberger is a remarkable performer with an incredible sound. I've heard his students and they have all represented him well, too. Numerous opportunities in Florida and the weather ain't half bad.
I heard a respected euphonium player once say that Jay Hunsberger is the best kept secret in Florida. I hope that word gets out to the right person. Studying with Jay will make you a better musician.

Re: University of South Florida Graduate Assistantship
I am Jay's current graduate assistant, and I can't say enough about what studying with him has done for me. Jay is an amazing teacher, performer and person, who goes above and beyond for his students. My playing is light years beyond what it was when I got here, and I've been more and more successful in my auditions and performances. In fact, I've taken more auditions since last year than I took in the rest of my life combined. Jay has pushed me to do things I never thought I could do in just over a year.
As for the studio itself, I've never found a more supportive, accepting and talented bunch. We have so much fun together, both inside and outside of school. Come to the Octubafest concerts on Oct. 28 (8pm) and Oct. 31 (1pm and 4pm) and you'll see.
Jay is the best! We love him!

Re: University of South Florida Graduate Assistantship
And now for a message from the department of redundancy department:
I was the GA at USF from '06-'08, and deciding to go there was the best decision of my life. If anyone out there has any questions about USF or would like to talk about the studio or the area, please feel free to contact me. I would not be the musician or human being I am today if it weren't for Jay Hunsberger and the TOP NOTCH studio, opportunities, and atmosphere in Tampa. The other brass faculty and studios are also very strong, as well as Dr. William Wiedrich and the USF orchestra (plus, brand new music facilities will be opening next year). To get to work with this studio, as well as receive a stipend and scholarship, will be a fantastic opportunity for someone out there. I urge anyone who is considering beginning work on a MM in tuba or euphonium next year to contact Jay. And to make things better, you'll be in Florida weather and by some of the best beaches in the country
Go Bulls!!!
