For tuba players considering undergraduate or graduate study in performance, with emphasis on orchestral playing, The Glenn Gould School of Music of the Royal Conservatory of Canada will once again be holding auditions for its tuba position in early 2010. The GGS is a professional studies program with a strong orchestral orientation. The program size is limited to instrumental players comprising one symphony orchestra, so only one tuba position is offered. Playing responsibilities include the RCM Orchestra, the contemporary music ensemble, brass quintet, low brass and full brass orchestral repertory classes, mock auditions every semester, and both solo recital and orchestral excerpt examination requirements. By limiting the number of players to one, the GGS program offers prospective tuba students the maximum amount of performance experience.
In addition to their studies with RCM faculty, students are offered regular masterclasses with renowned visiting brass artists. In recent years these have included: Alan Baer, Floyd Cooley, Tony Kniffen, David Kirk, Wes Jacobs, Randy Hawes, Joe Alessi, John Kitzman, James Markey, Douglas Wright, and Pete Sullivan. This year's tuba masterclass will be with Steve Campbell of the Minnesota Symphony.
The Royal Conservatory of Canada is located in downtown Toronto, Canada in the brand new Telus Centre for Performance and Learning, which includes the newly completed Koerner Hall, a state of the art concert hall which was inaugurated just last week.
Interested candidates should please note the following, as I have received many inquiries on these points in the past. 1. Scholarships and financial assistance are awarded based on merit and need, and are decided on a case by case basis. However, every diploma and degree student enrolled in The Glenn Gould School will receive financial aid, making it significantly less of a financial burden when compared to the tuition costs of other prominent music schools. 2. International applicants are welcome and encouraged. 3. While live auditions are highly preferable, we have heard recorded auditions in the past, and I would encourage interested candidates for whom travel distance may be prohibitive to consider this option.

Re: Glenn Gould School of Music Tuba Position
Having attended masterclass events and worked with a few of the members of the faculty at this school, I can say that this position shouldn't be overlooked. The facilities are fantastic, and it is in an amazing city with a very good orchestra. Anyone looking for a conservatory type education should consider the Glenn Gould School.

Re: Glenn Gould School of Music Tuba Position
Just a couple of additional details. I've been contacted by several people still interested in auditioning who believe that the application deadline has passed. In fact, only the online application deadline has passed, but the GGS will still accept applications. If you are still interested in auditioning please contact me by email (see previous post) for information on how to proceed.
Lastly, for those of you who have already applied please check the link below, as I have made one addition to the audition repertoire this year. You will also receive this information from the admissions office.
