The Music Department at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, located in the beautiful “Endless Mountains” of north-central PA, is auditioning students for the 2010-11 school year. With only 3400 students attending this liberal arts university, the music department boasts more than 200 music majors and 20 full-time faculty members, making it the largest department on campus. Undergraduate music degree programs include music education, music performance, music business, music technology, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Graduate programs include a Master of Arts degree in music education or instrumental conducting. Excellent faculty, high-achieving students, a progressive atmposphere, and beautiful surroundings are all reasons to consider Mansfield in the college/university selection process.
Opportunities for tuba players include excellent band, orchestra, and jazz programs. The band program comprises a fantastic Concert Wind Ensemble, a large Symphonic Band, the 200-piece “Spirit & Pride of PA” marching band, and an authentic Brass Band. The Symphony Orchestra regularly programs great repertoire for tuba students – this semester playing Berlioz’ “Symphony Fantastique” and Holst’s “The Planets.” The jazz program includes two full big bands and ample opportunities for small jazz combos. Additionally, most tuba students participate in regular, coached brass quintets or other chamber ensembles. Tuba studio students (5-7 on average) are active in ensembles at Mansfield as well as outside of the university. The student tuba-euphonium organization hosts an OcTUBAfest each year with performances by the MU Tuba-Euphonium Consort and a variety of guest artists which have included Scott Watson, Scott Cameron, Matt Brown and Velvet Brown.
Music department audition dates are 12/5, 12/7, 1/23, 1/25, 2/8, 2/20, 2/22, and 3/15. Auditions are also available by appointment. To be considered for music department scholarships, auditions must be completed by February 22, 2010. Available scholarships are not enormous, but neither is tuition - $5554 for PA residents, $13,886 for non-residents, and $9166 for New York “Good Neighbor” residents for 2009-10.
