Dear TubeNet readers,
I have been receiving a steady stream of inquiries from students who are interested in studying at the Curtis Institute of Music, and so I would like to post some information here to be available to everyone.
Curtis is a small school of only 160 students, and only one tuba student is enrolled at any given time. This means that an opening occurs only every few years. At this time, we are seeking a new student to begin study in the Fall of 2015. An audition is scheduled for the Spring of 2015, most likely in early March (exact date TBA). Each applicant must audition in person, in Philadelphia, on the single date set by the school.
There are two programs of study in which instrumental students at Curtis can enroll: the Bachelor of Music (Performance) program, and the Diploma program. The BM is an undergraduate degree, and the Diploma is a non-degree program, generally for older students who have already received a degree or degrees from another institution(s). Curtis does not offer a Master of Music degree for instrumental students.
In filling the vacancy for a new student, there is no preference for an applicant to one program or the other. We are simply looking for the candidate we feel will be the best fit for the school.
Since its founding in 1924, Curtis has accepted all of its students on a full tuition scholarship basis, which has enabled it to attract students of a universally high caliber. As a 1989 graduate of the school, I can attest that it is an extraordinary institution that is fully committed to the success of its students. The opening for a new tuba student represents an exciting opportunity for serious students who are pursuing a career in performance, and I encourage those students to consider applying.
I have been teaching at Curtis since the Fall of 2014. In addition, Paul Krzywicki, retired tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra (who was my teacher at Curtis) is also on faculty, and will have contact with the tuba student as well.
