I was informed that, like the Utah Symphony audition, no one was hired.

Matt Gaunt is awesome. Why did Randy Montgomery leave?

Re: Milwaukee Symphony
So is it true that no one won this one? (Read that in another thread here) Does that mean Matt Gaunt gets another year as acting principle? Did he audition? Finalists?
Seemed like a very well run audition, despite the hall's backstage architecture doing everything in its power to make it hard.

Kevin: Yes, not sure, yes, not sure.
I was also curious about why Randy left... hope all is well.

Re: Milwaukee Symphony
Hi Everybody - I don’t check in here very often but I heard there were questions on my whereabouts. What James heard is partially correct. The reason I left the Milwaukee Symphony was so that my wife could accept a new job in Southern California. She is not a doctor and does not work at a hospital. She is an executive at a large corporation that operates in the healthcare sector. Like many couples both of us have made sacrifices and compromises in order to support each other’s careers. I left the MSO in June of 2017. The MSO generously gave me a two-season leave-of-absence for which I am grateful. I notified them this past February that I will not return next season. It was a very difficult decision for me to leave the MSO because it is a really great gig. I was fortunate to get to play there for 12 years and I miss my friends there very much. The orchestra plays at a very high level and the brass section is excellent. There is a great sense of camaraderie amongst the orchestra members. I would have gladly stayed with the MSO until retirement age. However, having to stay in one geographic location was not ideal for my wife’s career. Over the years she turned down a number of opportunities so that I could stay with the MSO. It came to a point where it made more sense for us to prioritize her career over mine. I am proud of her accomplishments and I wanted to support her aspirations the way she had supported mine. The MSO is an excellent gig and whoever ends up there will be very fortunate. Best wishes to you all.

Re: Milwaukee Symphony
Randy Montgomery, your post is refreshing. The nice sense of fairness and consideration shown by you to your wife, and she to you, is an example for any good marriage. Best wishes to both of you as your lives take on new directions.
I hope you will break into the Hollywood film studio circuit of first-call players. There are quite a few good-paying tuba jobs in southern California, in performance and teaching. Keep us up to date on your career.

Re: Milwaukee Symphony
Maybe Randy goes for Utah? Maybe close enough to commute and it gives them the experience in Utah they’re looking for?

Maybe one of the very fine players we heard in our final rounds here in Florida will be what they are looking for in Milwaukee. (or Utah !!) We had an embarrassment of riches and they made for a tough choice.

Has there been any whisperings on when/whether there will be another audition?

Please verify, as this is not confirmed:
Bobby Black, a high school senior, Principal Tuba of Chicago Youth Symphony Orchstra, and a student of Scott Tegge, just won Milwaukee Symphony.

Did they ever announce a second national audition, or maybe not required per their CBA?

Re: Milwaukee Symphony
From my understanding, they held a private audition since no one was hired from their public audition. Don't take my word for it though. Just word of mouth.jtuba wrote:Did they ever announce a second national audition, or maybe not required per their CBA?
