Curtis Institute of Music Opening for Fall 2022; FREE TUITION

Post by Craig Knox »

Dear TubeNet community,

I am announcing an opening for a new tuba student at the Curtis Institute of Music for the Fall of 2022. Application and pre-screening materials are due December 15, 2021, with live, in-person auditions in Philadelphia scheduled for February 6-7, 2022. Please be advised that, due to limited space and covid safety protocols, live auditions will be limited to a small number of highly qualified applicants. Therefore, please take care with your pre-recorded audition materials, and submit a pre-screening round that you feel represents your best playing. If necessary, an additional live virtual (Zoom) round may be required prior to selecting the candidates who will play in-person auditions.

More information on the application and audition process is available at https://www.curtis.edu/. Included in this information is a detailed list of required repertoire for the pre-recorded pre-screening round. Please look carefully at that posted information before contacting me with any questions.

The Curtis Institute of Music is a private conservatory that was founded in 1924, and has been tuition-free since 1928. Financial aid and grants for living expenses are available to students, and a $20-million gift to the school was just announced which is earmarked to ensure that no student graduates with student loan debt. Enrollment is limited to approximately 160 students, comprising enough players for one orchestra; there is only one tuba student at any given time at Curtis. In its history, there have been only 30 tuba students who have graduated from the school. Over those years, some of those tubists have gone on to hold positions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, NBC Symphony, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Australian National Opera, Orchestra Del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, U.S. Army Band, U.S. Marine Band, and many other ensembles. Notable alumni include Leonard Bernstein, Alan Gilbert, Samuel Barber, Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, Yefim Bronfman, Hilary Hahn, Arnold Jacobs, Joseph Alessi, David Cooper, and many others.

Our current tuba student, Cristina Cutts, was featured as an Artist-In-Residence on the nationally syndicated radio program Performance Today: https://www.yourclassical.org/story/202 ... sdougherty

The tuba student at Curtis studies with me, and also receives regular instruction from Paul Krzywicki, retired tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who has been on on the faculty at Curtis for 50 years. In ensemble classes, all brass students also have regular interaction with other brass faculty including Blair Bollinger, Nitzan Haroz, Matthew Vaughan, David Bilger, Jennifer Montone, Jeffrey Lang, and Jeff Curnow. The tuba student at Curtis receives all playing assignments in all ensembles, including the orchestra, which has regular reading sessions with Yannick Nezet-Seguin, and has recently been led in concert by Osmo Vanska, Stephane Deveve, Robert Spano, and many others. The orchestra performs regularly at Verizon Hall, home of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and tours nationally and internationally.

Programs of study at Curtis are in music performance, and include a Diploma or Bachelor of Music degree for undergraduate students, and Post-Baccalaureate Diploma for graduate students. Also, look for an announcement from the school regarding a Master of Music degree option for graduate students beginning in Fall 2022. In filling this one opening, we welcome applicants to any of these programs. In keeping with the mission of the school, we will be looking for a student of exceptional talent, who we believe has the most potential to benefit from, and contribute to, the program.
