Glenn Gould School of Music

Post by Sasha Johnson »

For those of you planning auditions for undergraduate or graduate studies in tuba performance, the Glenn Gould School of Music of the Royal Conservatory of Canada will be holding auditions for our tuba position in February 2024.

Note that this is a full tuition scholarship for either a Bachelor’s degree or graduate artist diploma.

The Glenn Gould School is a professional performance program with a strong emphasis in orchestral training. The program is limited to instrumental players comprising one symphony orchestra, with only one tuba position.

International applicants are welcome and encouraged. Given the expense and challenges of traveling with tubas, we now accept recorded video auditions.

I will be happy to answer questions about any aspect of the school or the audition process, and can be reached at sasha.johnson@rcmusic.ca

Best,

Thanks to all of you who have written to express interest so far in the tuba audition for the Glenn Gould School. I thought it could be helpful to answer some of the frequently asked questions here:

-Yes, this is a full scholarship, fully funded, tuition-paid position, either for a four year bachelor’s degree, or a two year artist diploma.

-No, we don’t prioritize graduate or undergraduate for the audition. The strongest candidate is offered the position.

-Yes, international applicants are welcome and encouraged to apply. If the winning candidate is an international student, there is a visa process for Canada, but it is straightforward.

-No, there is not a tuba studio class, as there is only one tuba in the program. This is replaced by the orchestra low brass section studio class, which covers many of the same goals and topics.

-Yes, we have regular visiting guest artist masterclasses. Recent and past guests have included Mike Roylance, Yasu Sugiyama, Tom McCaslin, Craig Knox, Chris Olka, Carol Jantsch, David Kirk and Alan Baer.

Thanks again to everyone for your interest, and please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Very best wishes,
Sasha Johnson

Hello,

Just another quick update regarding this audition, since it seems it is unclear from our website.

Officially, the Glenn Gould School has returned to live auditions, primarily because of the small size of the program and the full-funding being offered to the successful candidate.

After some discussion on the subject, due to the complications of traveling with tubas we will be accepting unedited video auditions. Candidates interested in submitting video auditions will need to submit this request to glenngouldschool@rcmusic.ca

Please also feel free to be in touch with me directly.

Thanks again to everyone for their interest.

Best wishes,
Sasha Johnson
