Graduate Assistantship in Tuba at Oklahoma City University

The Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University announces a Graduate Assistantship in Tuba starting in August of 2006. Duties are to play in the Blackwelder Brass, a graduate brass quintet who's duties include outreach concerts, university events and church residencies. This graduate assistant will also be expected to play in the university orchestra, wind ensemble and pit orchestra. The winner of this position will receive a full-tuition scholarship and a modest monthly stipend and added pay for church work on weekends. Additional work is available teaching private lessons and freelancing in Oklahoma City.

The School of Music at Oklahoma City University is renowned for its exceptional training of musicians in the liberal arts tradition. For 80 years, its graduates have been in demand as singers, conductors, composers, instrumentalists, educators, critics and commentators. Construction continues on the Wanda L. Bass Music Center. The $31.5 million, 117,000-square-foot addition will more than double the size of the Bass School of Music. The Bass Music Center will feature 60 additional practice rooms, 40 new teaching studios, seven high-tech music labs, six ensemble rehearsal rooms, and a black-box theater. The expansion incorporates merges the best of 21st century arts and technology. Innovative design, wireless technology, and acoustical breakthroughs have created an unparalleled incubator for professional music training. Partnerships range from Apple Computer’s establishment of a pervasive bleeding-edge computing environment to the installation of the world’s first silent theatrical dimming system, from lighting pioneer Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc.. Completion is scheduled for April 2006.

In addition to the school’s All-Steinway designation, OCU has been selected as the nation’s first Conn-Selmer School. This partnership will enhance the Bass School’s guest artist series, fund ongoing clinics and workshops on the art of teaching, and provide the finest artist-level performance instruments and, for music education majors, the highest-quality method instruments.

Oklahoma City University offers MM degrees in performance, composition and conducting. The school is a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
