Civil Service Band Positions

Post by dave »

One of the trumpet players who plays in the local community band retired a few years ago from a Civil Service job playing at West Point. Is the entire West Point band Civil Service? Are there any other bands which are staffed partly or entirely with Civil Service musicians?

Yep,
CG= no basic, but do have to go to a course about the CG
Marine Band in DC = no Boot camp (ONLY THE DC BAND)
other than that all (I think) other bands do Basic/Bootcamp

No idea about the original Civil Service question.

All we do is a few hours of "this is the UCMJ, this is sexual harassment, this is an officer and how you salute it, etc etc"

To the best of my knowledge (after 26 years in The U.S. Coast Guard Band), people playing in the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point are enlisted members of the U.S. Army. That is true for all the service bands.

There are civil-service and contractor positions at military installations, usually for maintenance, food service, etc., but I not for band members. Perhaps there was some confusion in the conversation(?).

The bands will sometimes hire outside musicians for a particular concert, but those would be pay-for-gig deals, not a civil service position.

If someone knows differently, please correct me. Things change (although not as quickly in the military!).
