A big congratulations goes out to my good friend Tetsuya Ohtsuka for winning the Tokyo Phil audition. Tetsuya is the current tuba player in the Sendai Philharmonic.

Most were Japanes that auditioned. It was advertised for a long time on their website. I don't believe they were interested in an "international" search. Many orchestras aren't outside of the USA. There is nothing wrong with this.

Concur - in fact many countries are required to hold national auditions first. I think in Europe they must first have an audition for Europeans, then international. The orchestra can choose to hire nobody which will then require a new audition for all comers including internationals, which happens often. But just as often they'll hire a local.
I assume that's what happened in Japan, although I don't know about their specific laws.
