Curtis
Anyone know how many tuba students applied to Curtis this go around? I noticed that the deadline was back on the 11th. Also, does anyone know what Mr. Horner will be doing after graduating?
Good luck to those of you who will be auditioning and also to Seth.

it's a valid question. my personal interest is the opportunities that are presented with the postion. i also love the nec/boston and new york but julliard has never really interested me (no offense) and i would have to bay for boston/nec. i'm big on curtis for a few reasons: 1.) it's paid for. my mom has medical bills and tuition at the state school im at is enough. to ask her to pay even more for these schools would be really tough on her and the family emotionally and financially. 2.) there are TONS of subbing opportunities with the philly symphony. i've heard so many stories of people being hired to fill in for somebody in the orchestra. can't buy that kind of experience. 3.) i love the school that im at. my teacher is awesome and everyone there is great. but i need more of a challenge and i enjoy a more "upbeat" society. plus an orchestral atmosphere is something im looking for. 4.) the teaching from Mr. Kryzwiki (sorry if mispelled) and Ms. Jantsch (in a few years) will be a good experience.
this is just me and my reasons. hope this answered your questioin.

A stat I remember from a few years ago: somewhere along the lines of 1/3 of the tuba alumni from Curtis in the past 30 years are now employed in professional symphony orchestras. That'd be a good enough reason for me.Andrew Schwartz wrote:Just wondering guys, but what is with the huge attraction to curtis?

I would say that those guys with jobs would most likely have a job had they gone to (insert decent school name here)...
of course Curtis is a great school that can provide valuable experience opportunities....but it's not a magic factory that provides 33% of it's students a job that otherwise would have been lost in the music world

I applied, but don't really want to go there, but hey, doen't hurt to try. One thing that bothers me is that Mr. Krzywicki doesn't play Tuba that much anymore. I just took a lesson from him recently, and he told me he doesn't play, and he tried my horn and didn't sound like his old self. But hey, it's free...

Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd clarify a few things....
Seth is auditioning for grad schools. I don't know how many students applied for his spot.
Andrew--Curtis is a highly prestigious institution, for good reason. The Curtis Symphony Orchestra is incredible. Students there study intensely with renowned professional musicians, most of whom play in the Philadelphia Orchestra, which performs only four blocks away from Curtis. Curtis students can also find plenty of work gigging around town. I would definitely say that students at Curtis are "in the epicenter of the current action."
Tuckertuba--The Philadelphia Orchestra has strict subbing policies, and while it is true that students from Curtis will be seen playing with the PO, they had to first win an audition just to be on the sub list, and this is a feat accomplished much more often by string players than others.
Jarrad--In some cases, Curtis students will be offered an additional stipend for living expenses on a need basis.
Water Music--The fact that Paul Krzywicki doesn't play anymore does not mean he's not still a great teacher (take Roger Bobo and Toby Hanks for awesome awesome examples), and definitely does not mean that the next tuba student at Curtis won't have an excellent experience there.
I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.
Best of luck to those of you who are auditioning, and see you in March!

Oh, I know Mr. Krzywicki is a great teacher, I did take some lessons, and he is a very strict teacher, so he strives for perfection. The only problem with him not playing anymore is that he can't show you how he wants something done, he can only describe.

Epicenter? seriously?Andrew Schwartz wrote:Just wondering guys, but what is with the huge attraction to curtis? I understand the exclusivity of it, but is that it? I almost put in an application there myself, mostly just to see how i would rank against everyone else, but I realized that I would much rather go somewhere like New York or Boston and work with those guys who are really in the epicenter of the current action. Am I missing something?
