Additional duties may include teaching brass fundamentals class for Music Education majors, assisting with brass chamber music ensembles, teaching applied tuba lessons and/or other duties as needed. Total workload is 10 hours per week. This is a two-year (four-semester) half assistantship (contract is by semester, but renewable if work is satisfactory). Any additional hours can be taken at the in-state tuition rate.

The New Mexico Brass Quintet has toured the U.S., Mexico, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia and China, and has performed at major music conferences, including the College Music society, National MENC, Midwest Band and Orchestra Directors Clinic, and International Trumpet Guild Conference. The group has commissioned and premiered more than 50 new works and currently has four CDs available. Former members enjoy prestigious teaching positions at the Universities of Miami, Iowa, Oregon, Oklahoma and Tennessee, Wichita State Univ., Southeastern Louisiana Univ. and Florida State Univ., and perform in such ensembles as the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Wichita Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Chestnut Brass Company, Foothills Brass Quintet, Xalapa Symphony, Metropolitan Opera, Victoria Symphony, Oregon Symphony, New Albion Quintet, Knoxville Symphony, U. S. Air Force Band, U. S. Marine Band, West Point Band and U. S. Army Band.

The UNM Department of Music has 54 fulltime and part-time faculty members, and approximately 300 undergraduate and graduate majors. The Master of Music degree is available in Performance, Theory and Composition, Conducting, Music History and Literature, Collaborative Piano, and Music Education. The music facility boasts a 300-seat recital hall, classrooms, faculty studios, 40 student practice rooms, a Smart Lab, a computer lab, an electronic studio and two large state-of-the-art rehearsal halls. The Fine Arts Library is located within the Center for the Arts, as is Popejoy Hall, a 2000-seat auditorium that hosts performances by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, professional touring companies and UNM musical ensembles. The university is located in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan center nestled next to the Sandia Mountains. The state's major waterway, the Rio Grande, runs through the city. With an average of 340 days of sunshine annually, the climate accommodates a wide range of outdoor activities. The beauty of its physical surroundings, coupled with New Mexico's rich cultural and artistic heritage, makes studying at UNM a rewarding and enjoyable experience.
