No one has been picked yet. I believe that if you read the info on the website that the first round of semi-finals happen in Feb. The rest should happen in March.

I may have confused my stuff, but this is what I remember.

There have been about 12-13 players that are in the semi-finals now. I would name some names that are in the finals, but, I know I would be up all night answering notes about how bad it was to do that, so, I will not, unless allmighty moderator will allow it.

4 candidates on April 18. No one advanced.

5 candidates today. Today, Jim Markey advanced to the section round (2nd semi's round). Not sure how he did, since i was told to leave (ie. did not advance to section round)

5 or so more players will do the last day of semi's on 4/25 with the finals on the 27th.

This was in an email from David Finlayson to the Mannes low brass studio.

"Also, we finished our last semi final round for bass trombone today and we have only two musicians in the finals which will be held this coming Friday. Our two candidates are James Markey and Paul Pollard. You all know James. Paul is currently the bass trombonist with the Hong Kong Symphony. Should prove to be an exciting finish to this seemingly very long process. "

Yeah Paul Pollard! Before Hong Kong, he was the professor of trombone at the University of Northern Iowa for one year, and played with Cedar Rapids Symphony, and then won the Hong Kong job. He played with the Chicago Civic, has two solo CD's out, and is just a really great guy! He got his DMA from University of Iowa in 2001 -just before leaving for Hong Kong - it would be a great addition to have him back in the states! Below is a link to his second CD, and at the bottom you will find a more complete bio.

Yeah Paul!

Congrats Jim.
For those of you who don't know, Jim was assistant principal on tenor. When I played there full time for 3 years I had the opportunity to play with Jim on Tenor & bass. He is such a great musician that it doesn't surprise me at all that he was chosen.
