Did anyone advance today? I think they said there were 40 people total over the two days that are scheduled to take the audition (correct me please if I'm wrong).

I was just informed of a few people whom have advanced from someone at the audition. Was also told that there were 37 guys at the audition.

DePaul guys way to go!

William Russel
Kevin Harrison

Kent Eshleman (sp?)
Derek Fenstermacher (sp?)

That's all I know.

Here's what I just heard from the horse's mouth:

Two finalists: Adam Snider and Derek Finstermaker

Their final round was recorded (the music director was absent due to an illness), so when the director hears the recording, he'll make his decision.

The other semi-finalist (in addition to the 5 mentioned above) was McLain Pray, a fellow Michigan State-er. He was the one who advanced from the group of 12 that auditioned yesterday. Then there were 29 more who auditioned today.

Derek played his butt off; the little bit I heard from the hallway before his final round sounded great. Definitely a great guy; after all that, he came up to my concert at Symphony Center afterward! As if anyone at the audition hadn't had enough of orchestral tuba for the day!

Glad that DePaul was so well represented; we're trying not to let down Floyd!

I have not received any notification from Honolulu yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if we heard something by the end of this week. They technically have until next Wednesday to notify who the winner is. When we find out, we'll be sure to let everyone know.

It was a pleasure getting to know Adam at the audition last Wednesday. He's a great player and a great person as well. I just happened to hear some of his audition while I was waiting during the final round, and he sounded wonderful. His performance with DePaul's Symphony Orchestra that night was superb as well (all this after playing 3 rounds of orchestral auditions from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m.). They played Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, and Adam did a great job with it!

And since Adam studied with me during undergrad and grad years, I feel that I can say without a doubt, it COULD have happened to a nicer guy!

Shortly after Adam received the good news about Honolulu, he performed a fine quintet/double quintet recital at DePaul, including a couple of his own arrangements. Cool as a cucumber, he played beautifully.

The members of the Honolulu Symphony will be very pleased with their new colleague.

When they get jobs and leave, they "phone in" their performances for the tuba studio recitals:

Example: In the DePaul University Tuba Studio Recital of April 24, Thomas Allely performed the tuba transcription of John Cage's 4'33". Amazing contribution to the recital, since Thomas was thousands of miles away at the time playing in an orchestra in Australia for he had won the audition...

Ditto on that. Anyone who can be a finalist in a professional orchestra before receiving a Bachelor's is pretty outstanding! Great resume material! Congrats to both candidates on a superb job!

Congrats to Adam Snider!!! I had the pleasure of working with him my first teaching year at Western Michigan University. I knew he was a candidate for something great! Way to go Adam!!! Look out...I'm packing my bags for a visit to Hawaii..
