artist list looks challenging. anyone know where to pick up the music? hickeys doesn't have it yet.

Near as I can tell, Hickey's currently lists all the music on their site, just not yet on their Falcone page. Lots of new (to me, anyway) stuff on this list; should be interesting.

If not on Hickeys, try searching for the publishers website. They sometimes have a webstore. If they don't, there usually is a list of their vendors.

I wish the Falcone Artist Euphonium music was a little more original and not the same exact music as the ITEC Artist Euphonium competition. Instead of the Falcone competition being it's own entity it just seems like ITEC take two. What's up with that? Whatever happened to challenging us with various, difficult repertoire rather than having to prepare the exact same music for two different (not so different) competitions? To me it just seems to make the Falcone competition not so special. Stop making it easy on us... it's not supposed to be easy.

I would guess for everyone with the view that you have concerning variety of rep., there is someone who is thankful they don't have to spend twice as much on the purchase of music, accompanist fees, recording time, practice time, etc. Even if you make the competition, it costs money to get yourself to MI and stay there, to eat, etc. You have to pay for your accompanist at the festival. There's the same stuff for ITEC.

I am happy that Dr. Bowman picked some materials that are not so standard. I am very glad to have some new etude books with some interesting ideas, particularly the Fritze. Personally I think "Hungarian Melodies" is a very nice solo that I wish I had found years ago instead of clunking through overly-long and overly-difficult pieces for recitals. Would I love to end up forcing myself to learn twice as much music for the competitions? Sure, but if you feel that way you can create your own initiative and goals to fill in the light load that Falcone and ITEC competitions have placed on you shoulders this year.

You have to love the new unaccompanied selection for the final round, too. That kind of flexibility will be so interesting in the final round (assuming everyone doesn't do "Blue Lake Fantasies" because they did it for Tubonium).

I think you bring up a new point for discussion Fill. What would be a good piece to choose for the final round. It would have to be something really good that would be worthy of winning the competition with. What else is there other than the final mvt of Blue Lake Fantasies or the final mvt of John Stevens Soliloquies?

Thanks for misspelling my name, Mr. Hammer. What about a new piece, or writing something yourself? I am very curious how judges would react to that.

It says that self-composed is okay.

Beyond that, you could do:

A movement from Pat Schulz's Constellations
Any movements from Baroque unaccompanied pieces
Several movements from either of the Aagaard-Nilson pieces - 4 Lyriske Stykker or Two Insects
Vizzutti's Cascades
Any of the Tango Etudes by Astor Piazzola
Graham's Cyberspace
The unaccompanied movement from Snell's 4 Bagatelles
A cool etude (i.e. Charlier or the ones out of the Mead book) if you can get away with it

What about performing the Clinard Sonata...backwards? Sideways? Upside-down? Would that be impressive enough?

I was going to suggest that this might help to stretch the unaccompanied rep. until Jamie reminded me that there's more music out there than I know about

There are plenty of undergrads who've made it (and even won it!) in the past. I wouldn't count yourself out of the race just yet

Not trying to be an @$$ or anything, but if your recording wasn't very good, why did you even waste the money and send it? Just saying, the level of competition for Falcone is very high, and if you aren't sending in the best you've got, it's for sure going to be a waste of your time. Don't say to yourself "maybe it's not the best CD, but it might be good enough", because that's not going to get you there. I've heard several tapes that have been accepted through the years, some can pass for professional quality, and the rest are close to that level. Again, don't take any of this personally, but all I'm saying is that when you submit a tape for a competition/audition, you need to sound great, period.
