The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (AOBO) is Australia's only full-time specialist opera and ballet orchestra. The AOBO's sole purpose is to provide the orchestral component of the Sydney productions of our two national companies, Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Opera Australia.

Opera Australia's Music Director, Richard Hickox CBE, is the orchestra's Chief Conductor and 69 musicians are employed on a permanent basis providing the core of the AOBO. As the busiest orchestra in the country, the equivalent of some 24 full time additional musicians are employed on a seasonal or casual basis to ensure performance and repertoire requirements are met.

Over its thirty-five year development, the AOBO has not only sustained the artistry and overall development of our opera and ballet companies, but has developed a formidable knowledge of the particular demands of the performance repertoire. Orchestral playing is integral to the performances of both Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet and a vital factor in presenting performances of excellence that excite audiences and develop and sustain these art forms in Australia.

The position is based in Sydney, Australia's largest city and the nation's artistic capital.

The supporting recording must consist of:
- The first movement of Ralph Vaughan William's Tuba Concerto
- A piece or study of own choice drawn from solo, chamber or orchestral repertoire.

After the closing date the audition panel will review material provided by applicants and invite a small number of players to trial with the Orchestra.

Yes, the Australian Opera is based at the Sydney Opera House. I think it's a wonderful and iconic building, but the pit in the Opera Theatre is famously dreadful. There are plans in the pipeline to renovate the opera theatre and pit, but no-one seems to know when that will start or how long it might take. I'm not trying to discourage anyone, if I didn't have a job I'd try my hardest to get this one

What is the salary like ?
Would there be opportunities to play with the Sydney Symphony or is that mainly Steve's pupils that dep for that orchestra ?
Also, would you say that there are any favourites for the job from Australia or NZ ? Or is that why it has been opened up to international aplicants ?

The Job has been auditioned twice already, last year. No local candidate was acceptable, hence the opening up to international applicants.

There would be no opportunity to play with Sydney Symphony through this job. Both orchestras are very separate, even though it is possible to play casually with both as many players do, including myself.

I think the starting base salary is around $73,000au? Don't quote me on that but it is over $70k a year.

The job allows a fair bit of freedom, being that most calls are during the evening, i.e. opening up teaching opportunities etc..

Sure Im only in second year at University, but why not give it a shot!

If you're sending your application materials from the US, please be aware you will need to send them a day early because of the time difference (Australia is something like 18-20 hours ahead of the lower 48. The upshoot is you have to send things a day early if you want them to get there on time)

It's only been a week since the tapes were due, so no word yet. Could be a while longer before anything is heard.

I also got my rejection letter a few days ago. Anyone have a rough idea of how many folks even sent in packets for this?
