That's probably the reason the opening is not in the general public (i.e. their website). Highly qualified applicants belong to the AFM and receive International Musician.

I find this remark somewhat presumptuous and slightly condescending. While I consider myself a highly qualified applicant for most positions (including this one), I am not currently a member of AFM. The Union has very little control in my area, and while I was a member at one time, I resigned due to this fact. I am a very large supporter of the Union and do currently pay percentage dues on every gig I play. However, I found it to be somewhat of a waste to pay expensive annual dues merely to receive AFM monthly, and receive one gig directly from the union within my 2 year association with the organization. I have friends in AFM who inform me when jobs are posted exclusively in the magazine (which is rare, most also post on websites such as musicalchairs.info). I would also like to mention, that there are many unqualified applicants who can be and are members of AFM. So being a member is not a safe assumption for qualification (I realize you did not say anything to the contrary, I just felt it should be stated).

My apologies for the offense. Perhaps if I revise my statement to:

Highly qualified applicants know where to look for job openings like this...in the International Musician, the monthly magazine of the AFM.

I hope that phrasing is less presumptious and condescending to you.

Your assertion that many unqualified appicants happen to be members of the AFM is a non-sequitur to my original statement...I'm not sure why you felt it necessary to point out that many AFM members aren't qualified for various auditions, but I certainly agree with you. Membership in AFM doesn't instantly make you a better musician, or qualified to be invited to an upper-level audition such as Detroit. However, I would argue that it doesn't hurt to have "Current member, American Federation of Musicians" on a resume.

I suppose my belief is that those who are serious about a career as an orchestral tubist would join the AFM. As a former member, I'm sure you realize that there are many other benefits than just the magazine and receiving gigs. I'm sure there are many AFM members who don't appreciate the fact that so many non-members get access to the IM information from their friends who have to pay for it. But that's just my opinion...you are certainly free to disagree.

Respectfully, when I said it wouldn't hurt to include an affiliation with the AFM on a resume, I didn't mean to imply that some orchestras only consider those applications that include one. Including membership in AFM on your resume denotes, to me, that you are serious enough about a performance career to pay for a membership in an organization that supports performers. I hope you can see my point on that...whether you agree with it or not is up to you.

And I can't think of a more appropriate forum than "Auditions" to discuss the pros/cons of AFM membership and what is/isn't appropriate for resumes.

After 38 years in the DSO, probably to a well deserved retirement. Wes Jacobs is an amazing musician and I have enjoyed having the opportunity to listen to him perform through the years.

There are some relatively safe areas "not too far" from downtown Detroit. I don't think there will be any shortage of auditionees.

In what ways are the Haas and Novak Bruckner editions different? I have only ever seen the Novak and Kalmus editions.

I have ordered the Haas parts, I was just curious.

Just to clarify a little. There are slight but significant differences between the Novak and Hass editions of Bruckner 7. The most obvious is the type set difference (which does look quite a bit different), but not the most obvious are the articulation differences (i.e. 4th movement material).

...It's true though that the Torchinsky book does use the Novak edition.

In addition to the tuba opening in Detroit, there is also an opening for mayor of the city. Good Luck!
