I found the 2008 College Positions thread extremely beneficial for
my own uses, and for those of my students.

Lets start a 2009 thread with the same info as soon as possible!

Anyone seen any openings so far this new year?

I was recently told that a low brass job was open in one of the Dakotas, but have not been able to find the posting on Higher Ed Jobs. Anyone have the info?

Low Brass Teacher and Athletic Bands Director
(Trombone, Tuba, or Euphonium)
Department of Music


Position: Full-time, nine month. Teach studio low brass (trombone, euphonium, tuba) and serve as Athletic Bands Director. Other duties include: conduct the marching band, conduct the basketball pep band, teach courses in the music education curriculum such as marching band techniques courses, teach basic and/or advanced instrumental conducting, coordinate the annual marching band competition, and supervise independent study projects as appropriate to appointee’s qualifications and departmental needs. All faculty members are expected to assist in recruitment and to be active in research, performance, or creative endeavors. Excellence in teaching is expected -- both in the classroom and in mentoring students outside the classroom. Appointment begins August 2009.

Qualifications: DMA in low brass performance required (trombone, tuba, or euphonium), ABD considered. Previous experience leading and developing a band program preferred. Experience with music education programs desirable.

Rank and Salary: Assistant Professor, salary based on qualifications.

There was a low brass/music theory position at UW-Platteville, but that is all I know.

For those who keep track, I was offered the tenure track position at the University of Texas-Pan American.

Any news on Baylor and Appalachian? What else was open this year?

Indeed I have accepted the Low Brass/Music Theory position at University of Wisconsin-Platteville and look forward to developing a music composition curriculum there for budding young composers!! This has been a dream of mine since I got into academia--teaching somewhere where all of my musical interests will be used! I'm also looking forward to creating a very cool faculty chamber group and joining a faculty with so many former friends.

I will miss my former gig at Univ. of Nebraska-Kearney. Of all the places I've worked, I've never before worked with such fabulous and supportive colleagues than at UNK. Nice facilities, warm personalities, and an extremely supportive environment. The next person who gets this gig will truly be walking into a fabulous situation....including a low brass studio that is now double the size that I inherited. They will welcome you with open arms. I'll truly miss the great folks at UNK.

Many folks may wonder what drives people like me to seek other employment when a gig such as UNK is so great. I had a pretty good conversation about this the other night with some of my students and I felt it might be a relevant discussion for this board. For me it comes down to this, in hierarchical order:

1) Live where you want to live (close to friends, family, other natural amenities (climate, culture, etc.))
2) Do what you want to do (teach/research in the area(s) that interest you the most)
3) Get paid what you think you are worth/job security (tenure)

Not everyone's list will be the same. My list would have been ordered quite differently before I had kids. Given these ideas, however, I'm thrilled to be moving back to Wisconsin where I shall be surrounded by so many friends and family. I'm looking forward to living in a progressive state with lots of woods, lakes, cheese & beer; teaching low brass and music composition, and earn a living in a tenure-track position with a faculty full of friends. As they say in those Miller Lite ads (or was it Michelob?)...'It doesn't get any better than this.'

Dear Tubenetters,

I am very happy to be able to announce that I have been hired as Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Baylor University.

I was extremely impressed with every aspect of the Baylor School of Music when I visited for my interview--faculty, students, facilities--and I am also excited about the strong Christian affiliation of the university.

It has been a pleasure working with my colleagues and students at Northern Arizona University this past year, and I wish them the best.

Also, I want to say good luck to current Baylor students Clay Garrett and Kevin Butler who will be competing in the Tuba Artist division at the Falcone Festival in August.
