Not an alum, but I am very familiar with the area and have heard very good things about Adams State. If you aren't married to the large university ideal of college life, Alamosa is an awesome little city. If you like rock climbing, Penitente Canyon is close by. There is some awesome backpacking up around Creede, about an hour away. The Rio Grande has a ton of good fishing. A straight shot up Hwy 17/285 to the north puts you at Monarch, a pretty under-rated ski area. A bit west of that puts you at Crested Butte. There is an airport with regional service to DIA, and flights are relatively cheap. The natural beauty of the area cannot be easily matched on a college campus anywhere else. The great thing about Alamosa is that it isn't boring at all, but it also doesn't have a lot of the distractions that you find on enormous campuses.

Were I a high school senior, I would definitely look into this opportunity.
