Springfield (OH) Symphony audition

Greetings all,

As many of you know, the Springfield Symphony is holding auditions soon, and we recently passed the deadline for applications. As I am the personnel manager, the duty falls to me to set up auditions. We had an overwhelming response, which mandated our culling through the applications. The reason I mention this here is that we had no choice but to limit the number of tuba applicants that will be invited (as well as trombone, violin, cello and bass), and I had to be in on that process. To this end, I have removed myself from the auditions, and will be serving only as staff for the orchestra.

I wish those who are being invited the best of luck, and look forward to working with the new principal when they are named. For those who have applied, you will be receiving notification of your status shortly.

Sincerely,

Tim Olt
Personnel Manager
Springfield (OH) Symphony Orchestra

From the website home page:

Musicians should mail an application and resume to the Springfield Symphony Office, Attn: Personnel Manager, P.O. Box 1374, Springfield OH, 45501, and be prepared to play a solo, and excerpts from the list in the Musician Audition Application. The deadline for applications is August 28, 2009.

Those who didn't read the home page for the orchestra they applied for will likely be the victims of the first "cut."

Why?

This thread SHOULD be a positive learning experience for you. (A simple, but crucial, lesson about paying attention to detail.)

If it is not, then you truly should not "bother" in the future.

*Note: ALL employers (music or otherwise) sorting through a first round of applicants for a job share one trait: they are looking for reasons to toss applications, not reasons to keep them. Simply a fact of life.

Greetings all,

The Springfield Symphony held auditions this past Saturday, including principal tuba. As I mentioned previously, I withdrew due to the conflict of interest presented by being personnel manager.

We heard several very fine tubists, and the audition committee deliberated. The conductor even kicked me out (as I knew all the competitors) and the committee selected our new tubist.

I am proud to announce that Thomas (ok, you probably know him as T. J.) Ricer has accepted the position as the new principal tuba of the Springfield (OH) Symphony Orchestra. I believe that any of you that know him will agree that he has more than paid his dues, and that this is a much-deserved win for him. Congrats T. J.!!!!!!!!!
