International Composition Competition

Lieksa Brass Week will hold an International Composition Competition to provide repertoire for the II Lieksa International Euphonium Competition (2011).

1. The Euphonium Competition will be held during Lieksa Brass Week, July 22-30, 2011 and the Composition Competition between March 1 and December 1, 2010.

2. The competition is open to composers of all nationalities and all ages. Members of the competition Jury appointed by the Organiser cannot take part in the competition.

3. The competition entry must be a solo work for euphonium (no piano or other accompaniment). It must be at least five (5) but not more than ten (10) minutes long. The composer must state the estimated duration in the score.

4. Entries must not have been previously published or performed.

5. Entries for the competition must be sent anonymously but equipped with a pseudonym to the Competition Office and be postmarked December 1, 2010 at the latest. Any scores bearing a later postmark will be disqualified. After the entry deadline, withdrawal, alterations, or revisions in a score already submitted will not be permitted.
The score must be accompanied, in a separate sealed envelope bearing the same pseudonym, by the entry form downloadable on the Brass Week website. The form must state the name of the work, the composer’s name, age, gender, postal address, telephone number(s) (with international dialling codes), email address, nationality, and signature to confirm that he/she agrees to abide by the competition rules and the decisions of the Jury.

6. In December 2010 the Jury will select three prize-winners from among the anonymous compositions. The Jury will then announce the names of the winners. The winning work will be part of the compulsory repertoire for the first round of the Euphonium Competition. The work will be sent to players taking part in the competition as a PDF file. Should the winner wish to attend the premiere of the work in the said round of the Euphonium Competition, he/she will be responsible for the ensuing costs (travelling expenses and accommodation). The Organiser will help with travel arrangements and finding accommodation.

7. The Jury will consist of the following members:
Jukka Myllys, Chairman
Juha Pisto
Benjamin Pierce

8. The following prizes will be awarded:
I prize €1 000
II prize €600
III prize €300
The Jury will have the right to divide the prizes in some other way.
The jury's decision is final and cannot be appealed.
9. Lieksa Brass Week reserves the right to perform, for no separate payment, any other entry in the Composition Competition in its concert series. The copyright will remain with the composer. The Organiser will have the right to broadcast, record, video, televise, film and photograph competition performances and concerts and to make sound and video recordings of these. Copies of the entries will be made for the Jury to work from and one copy of each score will be stored in the archive of Lieksa Brass Week’s Composition Competition Committee. Scores will not be returned to their composers. All the competitors will be personally informed of the progress of the competition.

10. Entries should be sent to
