Hello Everyone,

I am writing to announce a Graduate Assistantship in Tuba/Euphonium that is available beginning next fall in the tuba-euphonium studio at Baylor University. The assistantship is for a master’s student in either tuba or euphonium, and it includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend of approximately $6500. The duties may include playing in the graduate brass quintet, assisting in low brass methods class and the tuba-euphonium studio, and other activities within the School of Music as determined by the Instrumental Division.

The Baylor School of Music has a thriving brass department. Recent tuba/euphonium student successes include a first place finish at the Falcone competition (Clay Garrett, MM ’10) and holding the tuba position in the Music Academy of the West (Zach Graff, class of ’11). Upcoming events include the Baylor Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble recital at the U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference next January and hosting the ITEA South Central Regional Conference next March. We also have a very active faculty brass quintet.

I'd like to offer a quick, unsolicited endorsement, even though I'm no longer affiliated w/Baylor. In addition to what Kent (Dr. Eshelman) already said, I'm compelled to mention the fact that he himself is a remarkably versatile and accomplished musician (on both tuba and piano). He's very active as a performer, and he knows what it takes to succeed as a competitor (won Falcone at both the student and artist levels, won Jeju Int'l Brass Competition, and the list goes on). Best of all (IMO), he is also the real deal away from the horn (and keyboard) -- someone I wouldn't mind my own son modelling himself after. With so much emphasis today on building great musical chops, it's easy to neglect the importance of building great character as well. This is a tremendous opportunity for someone to not only get a very respectable graduate degree but more importantly, have an outstanding graduate experience.
