The Glenn Gould School of Music of the Royal Conservatory of Canada will once again be holding auditions for its tuba position in early 2012 for studies beginning the following September. The GGS is a professional music performance training program with a strong orchestral orientation. The program size is limited to instrumental players comprising one symphony orchestra, so only one tuba position is offered. Playing responsibilities include the RCM Orchestra, the contemporary music ensemble, brass quintet, low brass and full brass orchestral repertory classes, mock auditions every semester, and both solo recital and orchestral examination requirements. By limiting the number of players to one, the GGS program offers prospective tuba students the maximum amount of performance experience and attention.

In addition to their studies with RCM faculty, students are offered regular masterclasses with renowned visiting brass artists. In recent years these have included: Alan Baer, Tony Kniffen, David Kirk, Floyd Cooley, Steve Campbell, Wes Jacobs, Randy Hawes, Joe Alessi, John Kitzman, James Markey, Douglas Wright, and Pete Sullivan. This year's tuba masterclass will be with Sam Plafian on November 4, 2011.

The Royal Conservatory of Canada is located in downtown Toronto, Canada in the Telus Centre for Performance and Learning, including the newly completed Koerner Hall, a state of the art concert hall.

Thank you to all those who have inquired or already applied for the GGS. There are just a couple of details I should have mentioned in my initial post.

The first is regarding scholarship funding. While every new student is evaluated individually on a case by case basis, due to the responsibility and singularity of the tuba position, there is generally considerable funding available for the accepted candidate. As such, candidates should not be deterred by tuition figures.

The second is recorded auditions. If travel to Toronto with two tubas is cost prohibitive, we will absolutely give full consideration to recorded audio or (preferably) video auditions. In the past, some candidates have opted to travel to the live audition with one tuba, and submit a recorded audition for the audition repertoire of the other. This is also totally acceptable.

Lastly, the official deadline for applications was yesterday, Dec 1. There is however flexibility in this deadline, so if there are candidates who still wish to apply, please contact me directly and I will set it up with admissions.

Thanks to everyone for their interest.
