The U.S. Navy Band is a preferentially staffed Presidential support activity whose members are permanently stationed at the Navy Yard in historic Washington, DC. Members of the Navy Band are guaranteed advancement to pay grade E-6 after completion of basic training ($61,836/year with dependents; $54,384 without dependents) with a minimum enlistment of four years. Musicians earn full military benefits including basic pay; free medical and dental coverage, allowances for housing, food, and uniforms; thirty days annual vacation with pay; no lost time for sickness; free medical care and low-cost dental care for dependents; inexpensive group life insurance; commissary and exchange privileges; and tuition assistance.
Audition requirements maintain that you be a U.S. citizen aged 18 to 34, pass the Armed Forces Entrance Physical, and be otherwise qualified for service in the U.S. Navy. Current military members and some veterans may be exempt from the age requirement. The Navy and Navy Band have strict appearance and weight standards. Each candidate will be weighed and measured prior to auditioning for the U.S. Navy Band. Additionally, musicians who are hired must conform to weight and appearance requirements prior to enlistment. Audition materials will not be returned, and all expenses and travel arrangements are the sole responsibility of the candidate. Upon winning the audition, the candidate must enlist in the Navy and complete basic training before appointment to the U.S. Navy Band.

Karl, not that I'm considering auditioning , but is Navy basic training required for those coming from other branches?

Although there are weird exceptions, most other-service members do not have to attend boot camp. Once is considered enough...

Depends on the service. If you are coming from Army/Marine Corps than no. I don't even think coming from the Coast Guard you would either. Somewhere out there there is a chart for this and I THINK (not sure please check this out on your own) that it goes like so...

If you are going "up" the list than most of the time yes you do have to redo basic. Going "down" no. However, if you have been out more than 2 years than you have to go back no matter what. (You can always get a waiver for everything it seems, ask a recruiter)

No problem. Due note though that if you are PRIOR service that these numbers don't mean much. The prior service thing is a whole can of worms on its own but just wanted to put that info out there.

The Navy Band is a GREAT opportunity. Rally good people in the band, and a GREAT way to serve your country and play the Tuba! Filling Karl's shoes will be a big task : )

On a prior thread, some info was put out about enlistment age for US Army , I wanted to give more current info. You must be age 34 when entering Basic Training.

FYI, for US Army the enlistment age ( with no prior service ) is up to 35 years old, effective April 1st, 2011, the Army has reverted to the lower age limit.

The resume should include your contact info (of course), playing experience/ensemble membership (current and past),competition experience (if you won or placed), and 3 references (and their contact info). And keep it to one page total - if it all won't fit on to one page, keep your most recent and relevant playing experience on there, but don't skimp on full contact info for you and your references (name, address, phone number, and email address).

Granted it was written at least 14 years ago (that's when I first encountered it), I always felt Doug Yeo's resume advice was great and is still applicable today.

Yep, I'm the old guy retiring. Sorry to have not posted in a while, but all these one-nighters are taking a toll (that's my story and I'm sticking to it for the next 5 days).

37 auditioned, 9 made semis, 2 in finals...but that's all I know.

All I know is 9 in semis, James Land, Kyle Huron, and Dan Castillo were among the group.

Kyle and Dan made finals. 2 very fine candidates to pick from.

According to Dan, Kyle is being interviewed for the position. I guess we'll see what comes out of it.
