Wow. Out of that list of 30 some odd excerpts they pick three, then send everybody home? I don't even know what to say about that.

It's been that way for 25 years...

All of us Canadian players take that for a fact!

This is a lot of us guys' (I don't play pro anymore, didn't take the audition, but it was my dream job) dream job, and some great players flew out and practiced long hours for that eventhough they knew of that FACT.

The least the jury pannel could have done is listen to(a least some of) them more...THey might have been surprised

Thumbs down to the MSO brass pannel

Guys,
Was Sasha Johnson part of the audition? If yes, how come he hasn't been selected? He is a great player and very talented with a great sound. Who else was in the audition list, does anybody knows?
Thanks,
MD

Yes he was Michel...

as well as
- Paul Beauchesne (Victoria Symphony)
- Peder Maclellan (Vancouver Symphony)
- Chris Lee (Winnipeg Symphony)
were there to name a few...

All the best to you guys for the international

Thanks Nic!
These are all good players!!! What kind of players are they looking for? May be it is just a strategy to see who would come from the International ! I believe there is enough good players (even just in Quebec) to fill this position. I will be curious who will apply from the International side (probably more American players because of the proximity of the city).
Thanks again,
MD

In defense of the OSM panel- these musicians are charged with maintaining the very high standards of the orchestra and replacing an outstanding tubist, Dennis Miller. Those are big shoes to fill!

I have been on numerous audition panels and have never heard discussion of going international before the audition.

Auditions are a pain in the ***. There is nothing an audition panel likes better than finding someone in the first round.

The OSM has an outstanding record of hiring Canadian musicians.

In order to win a major orchestra principal position audition, you need to be a great player having a great day. Is it not conceivable that the top players auditioning that day did not play their best? Remember the first round is screened, so reputation is meaningless.

This is an important job in a great orchestra that is not going to be given away. It will have to be earned.

Good luck everyone in the international round. Bring your "A" game!

Well spoken, Mark, glad to see sensible wisdom from a huge contributor to the Canadian tuba scene, still remember lessons and listening to you with the TSO in Roy Thomson Hall...real inspiration.

All best,

Alex

Hello Mark,

thanks for your input

With all due respect, I don't think the MSO pannel decided to go international beforehand, and my comment was perhaps misleading. I think they were hasty...that's all.

One could say that I was hasty giving my "thumbs down", and I would maybe change it to say that I was dispapointed in them as I have the utmost repect for the members of the MSO brass section.

Wilst they were they were sitting in that room they could have asked;
"Could you do this one, one more time.." from a few of them

I have to agree with you: Dennis' shoes can't be filled easily. He is an outstanding players and I don't think anybody's ever gonnna sound like him in this orchestra hence taking the time to listen to some guys...Why not coconut!

Word on the street (and pretty much fact) is that they almost always go international, but it does not mean they don't pick Canadians...

Anyhow all the best to them all

Nicolas Martin
