I can't help but notice the number of Dave Zerkel's students in the finals. Impressive!

I mean this with no disrespect, but is that because his students are overrepresented in the competition? You can't win if you don't enter...

Dave's studio is loaded, I heard 3 out of four at STEW a few weeks back and they all played fantastic.

I highly doubt the number of UGA's selected participants is because of a low applicant pool. Especially considering the students are also doing really great in a number of international arenas. Would the same question have been posed for any other studio putting forth really great work ethic? I think credit should be placed where credit is due.

I'm not convinced either way without the numbers to back it up. When there are a large number of students from the same studio, it can mean a few things. One of those things is that the teacher may push more for participation in competitions than other teachers. I don't know the numbers or the facts, but I do see the same teachers/studios come up a LOT. That says to me (whether its true or not) that these competitions are important to those teachers, and they strongly encourage participation in this.

I'm sure this comes out of the college selection process for students too, that teachers make it clear what their goals are for students, and if solo competitions are part of that plan.

Absolutely. It could have been a blind list of names and "Teacher X," and it's really the same point. The winners are the best players out of those who participated. They may very well be the best players out of everyone who didn't participate as well, but that's not really the point of a voluntary competition. The people who don't enter don't win, but it doesn't mean they're not out there (and gunning after the same orchestra gigs).

Of course! Who ever said anything contrary? Really not trying to take anything away from these kids or their teachers, it's really a great accomplishment.
