Western Michigan University has a terrific graduate assistantship open for the fall of 2013. The tuba assistantship is tied to performing with the Graduate Brass Quintet, Western Winds (a mixed chamber group of students and faculty), a major ensemble each semester, and instructing the tuba/euphonium section of the instrumental methods class. Additional opportunities may arise if the GA has skills to fill supplemental needs such as teaching aural skills, working with the marching band, etc.
The brass area at Western Michigan University has a strong tradition of excellent chamber music opportunities and instruction. The Western Brass Quintet is coming up on its 50th year, and has toured all over the United States, Germany, Russia, and China. There are usually 3-5 undergraduate brass quintets in addition the the graduate brass quintet, all of which receive weekly coachings, and numerous performance opportunities throughout each semester. Western has produced professional brass players in major symphony orchestras, premiere military bands, and full-time freelancers in major markets like New York City. The Western Michigan University Brass Area prides itself on pre-professional training designed to give real-life concert experience coupled with the highest level of applied teaching and guidance.
