Talent Grants at Western Illinois University

Amazed as I am, the School of Music at Western Illinois University will be awarding Talent Grants to two incoming tuba Freshmen for the Fall 2014 semester. Audition dates are:
December 7, 2013
January 11, 2014 Chicago Area (location TBA)
February 8, 2014
February 17, 2014 (President's Day)
If you can't make Pearl Harbor Day (or any of the other dates), it's not a real problem as long as you audition by President's Day, because the awards go out shortly after that. I love to pull strings and get folks special audition dates - really. It makes me feel special.
WIU was the first institution in Illinois to offer degree programs in Music Therapy and Music Business, in addition to applied music, jazz studies, composition, music education and of course a "liberal arts" degree in music. In addition, any music major can add an "arts technology" minor to their major (it's most often done by Music Business types.)
Over the past few years the School has established a "sister institution" exchange program with the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Brazil, anchoring their annual Salvador Wind and Percussion Festival. We'll be touring the inland part of the country during March of 2014 - not sure about the following year.
Why am I amazed at having TWO talent grants for tuba players? Because a "talent grant" is a subsidy that is applied directly to the cost of tuition (up to the full amount) and it is based on a student's ability to play their instrument. In return, the student must play in two major ensembles (if you're a good player, who wouldn't?) The School of Music has dozens of SCHOLARSHIPs as well, but they are independent of the talent grants - so if you are, say "smart" or stuff like that you can qualify for them IN ADDITION to the talent grants.
The most direct way to start inquiring about these talent grants is to contact the school's "Admissions Goddess", Yvonne Oliver, at (309)298-1087, or e-mail her at yl-oliver@wiu.edu" target="_blank" target="_blank. Of course you're more than welcome to PM me, since eventually we'll be talking anyway, but Yvonne is cool and has all the answers (sometimes I just make them up, so she's more trustworthy
)
I always feel that hearing this kind of propaganda goes down smoother if you hear it from a student, so if you'd like to hear one of our tuba student's take on the program, PM me and I will get a current student to contact you and give his or her side of the story.
The WIU School of Music Website has the repertoire for auditions, as well as more flashy stuff about the school, so please feel free to browse at:
