Hot Springs Music Festival seeks Tuba Apprentice

Post by todd2ba »

Summer Music Festival now accepting Applications for Tuba Apprentice.

The Hot Springs Music Festival is accepting applications for its 2014 tuba apprentice. Season Nineteen runs from May 31-June 14, 2014. All festival apprentices attend on full scholarship plus housing. The tuba apprentice studies under the tutelage of Todd Cranson, of Henderson State University and the Hot Springs Music Festival, and performs all concerts with the Festival Orchestra. Chamber music opportunities are also a strong possibility.

The Hot Springs Music Festival is a teaching festival for pre-professional musicians. We pair accomplished apprentice musicians with mentors from major orchestras, chamber ensembles and conservatory faculties. Apprentices have the opportunity to perform “side by side” in orchestral, chamber, solo recital, and choral settings with their mentor. The festival symphony orchestra rehearses and performs under the baton of Maestro Peter Bay of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Apprentices can also enjoy lessons, master classes, reading sessions, and more. For two weeks, this community turns the historic spa resort of downtown Hot Springs and Hot Springs National Park into a classical music haven, performing over 20 concerts and 250 free, open rehearsals for music lovers from around the globe. Come experience our brand of Casual, Classical, Fun. Come experience the Hot Springs Music Festival!

Tuba application materials must include 2 contrasting solos or contrasting movements of one solo piece and 4 excerpts of your choice. One solo may be replaced by an etude. Apply online by March 14 for priority consideration. There is a $40 application fee. If accepted, apprentice musicians attend on full scholarship with housing at the new, state-of-the-art dormitory provided.

Attention all tuba players. Go to this festival.

Can't say enough great things about the Hot Springs Music Festival and Todd Cranson. Make a great tape, get accepted to the festival, and laugh at those who didn't apply because you're going to get a great experience performing, learning and networking - oh, and it's free (minus travel to and from the festival and for food while you're there) AND it doesn't "eat up" you whole summer.

Mr. Cranson is a great teacher and also runs the festival; so one could certainly learn a lot about non-profits and running a music festival, I'm sure.

Two weeks is the perfect amount of time to have a great time, meet great people, learn a lot and get back home to keep gigging and teaching over the summer.

Oh, and Todd and his wife run a brewery - which happens to be right in the downtown area...so...

Is accompaniment reacquired for the solos?
There are appropriate times for beauty and crudeness - use both.
