Tuba/Euph studies at the University of Akron

Post by CJBlaha »

Hi everyone.
The University of Akron has openings for both undergraduate and graduate student tuba and euphonium players. The studio at UA has a very long history of outstanding success in the music school, most especially in the brass department. Following in the footsteps of Tucker Jolly, Ed Zadrozny, Bill Hoyt and Scott Johnston, the new generation of brass faculty is energized and excited to work with the outstanding young people attending Akron.

Undergraduate applicants are asked to audition by performing a solo or two short solo movements that feature contrasting styles and showcase the best the student has to offer. Scholarships are available for outstanding musical and academic achievement.

Graduate applicants for Master of Music study are eligible for a Teaching Assistantship that is available Fall 2015. A full assistantship includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend of roughly $7000. This assistantship can be split in half to accommodate two graduate students for the studio. Even with the assistantship split, a graduate student can be full time for extremely minimal cost and still have an annual stipend of roughly $3500. The audition is more extensive, involving 3 letters of recommendation and an interview. Please note, the University of Akron School of Music does not offer DMA study, only undergrad and masters levels.
