Tuba Assistantship at WMU. Application Deadline: Feb. 15

Post by jcameron »

Western Michigan University has a terrific graduate assistantship open for the fall of 2015. The application deadline for this assistantship is February 15.

The GA position at WMU is primarily focused on performance with the Graduate Brass Quintet. The Graduate Brass Quintet is made up entirely of Graduate Assistants at WMU and performs extensively as a unit and in collaboration with the Western Brass Quintet. In addition, the GA will perform duties for the Tuba and Euphonium studio and other academic areas as skill and need allow. This position is focused on giving the GA real-world teaching and performing experience to enhance future career options. I have attached a flier with the official announcement of the position.

The brass area at Western Michigan University has a strong tradition of excellent chamber music opportunities and instruction. The Western Brass Quintet is coming up on its 50th year, and has toured all over the United States, Germany, Russia, and China. There are usually 3-5 undergraduate brass quintets in addition the the graduate brass quintet, all of which receive weekly coachings, and numerous performance opportunities throughout each semester. Western has produced professional brass players in major symphony orchestras, premiere military bands, and full-time freelancers in major markets like New York City. The Western Michigan University Brass Area prides itself on pre-professional training designed to give real-life concert experience coupled with the highest level of applied teaching and guidance.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone that might be interested in our GA position. Also, don't hesitate to contact me with questions.

The assistantship available at WMU is a great one. As the current GA, I can say that studying with Dr. Cameron for the past year and a half has dramatically improved my playing. He's an excellent teacher and an excellent performer, and knows how to convey these skills to his students.

As far as the assistantship itself, the primary duties are performing in the Graduate Brass Quintet and the University Orchestra/Symphonic Band. There are opportunities to perform with faculty in chamber music settings as well, with the Western Winds ensemble that performs at least once per semester. The assistantship would be great for those looking into a performance career or education career alike. Part of the assistantship duties includes teaching the Tuba Methods course for music education majors, which is offered each fall semester. It's a rare opportunity to be the official teacher of record of a university level course while working on a masters degree, so it's definitely something to consider if you're looking to teach.

At the end of the day, Kalamazoo is home to some great breweries, including the renowned Bell's, which is reason enough to attend WMU!

I highly recommend this assistantship to anyone who is willing to work and make drastic improvements in their playing. If you have questions about the assistantship, just let me know.
